Deckhand

DIVISION – Tennessee Valley Towing

Job Summary:

A Deckhand is responsible for the preparation, oversight and maintenance of barges and vessels. This position works a 28 days on, 14 days off, rotation. This opportunity does NOT require relocation!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to work on the vessel for a period of 28 days.
  • Build and check tow by utilizing various tools/equipment to include but not limited to wrenches, ratchets, shackles, chain straps and wires/cables.
  • Move and stack sets of rigging throughout the vessel and barges.
  • Move pumps and hoses about the barges and place hoses in wing tank/void for removal of water.
  • Assist with the stocking and delivery of various supplies from on the vessel to and from the front hole.
  • Complete skiff operations to allow the crew to go ashore and come aboard the vessel.
  • Put out sounders at the head of the barge (river division). Complete processes to allow the vessel to take on fuel (inland division).
  • Complete daily and periodic cleaning tasks to include but not limited to trash removal, mopping, scraping, sanding and painting.

Qualifications:

  • Must have transportation to and from our headquarters (Paducah, KY) for crew change.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform any/all essential job functions.
  • Ability to maintain reasonably regular and punctual attendance.

Vessel Engineer

DIVISION – Tennessee Valley Towing

Job Summary:

The Vessel Engineer is responsible for the vessel maintenance and upkeep as they operate, repair, and maintain the various systems aboard a vessel. They are responsible for safe and efficient mechanical and associated systems aboard the vessel. The Vessel Engineer’s primary responsibility is to maintain the mechanical propulsion systems of a vessel according to the directions of the vessel’s commanding officer including the engines, pumps, boilers, and generators. Additional responsibilities include maintaining electrical, refrigeration, and ventilation, heating and cooling systems. Vessel Engineers record information for engineering logs, such as speed and direction change orders and gauge readings. This position works a 28 days on, 14 days off, rotation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assures safe crew, vessel, and tow operations through use of promoting, practicing, and enforcing TVT’s safety systems, including audits, drills, investigations, contacts, and safety logs.
  • Assures safe vessel operations through regular monitoring and servicing of vessel systems (i.e., engines, steering, electrical, etc.).
  • Assures Engine Room housekeeping through regular cleaning, painting, and maintenance.
  • Assures and directs transfers fuels, lubricants, and bilge from fuel flats in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintains logs of engine hours, fuel transfers, and other maintenance activities.
  • Conducts repairs to vessel engines, generators, and other vessel systems as required.
  • Ensures vessel operation through a program of regular maintenance of vessel systems.
  • Responsible for completion of necessary paperwork for recording/documentation purposes. Supports, complies, and actively participates in TVT’s safety system and Company policies and procedures.
  • Complies with and enforces United States Coast Guard (USCG) & environmental regulations, and Company policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills by facilitating an environment onboard the vessel and among crew that promotes teamwork and diversity.
  • Must be able and willing to return to a vessel during their scheduled time off if an emergency arises. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as an engineer on a towboat preferred.
  • Must have the ability to operate a variety of power and hand tools.
  • Must have the ability to read and comprehend blueprints and piping diagrams.
  • Must be able to read and understand various meters and gauges associated with large diesel engines.

Job Summary:

The Chief Deck Officer , a newly created position , will ensure vessel quality, safety, development, and growth. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reports to the Port Mate of James Transportation and is responsible for managing daily vessel operations.
  • Supervises all currently assigned deck crew members including Senior Mates, Mates, Relief Mates, Leadman and Deckhands, primarily operating on the Tennessee River.
  • Maintains effective and constant forms of communication with the Port Mate, Captains, Pilots, and all deck crew members on currently assigned vessels.
  • Ensures that all currently assigned deck crew members on vessels comply with environmental regulations, laws, policies, procedures, and processes; and that operations are conducted safely and efficiently.
  • Conducts day to day vessel operational tasks including but not limited to watch change protocol, make locks, build tow, prep and paint, organize tow, prepare for tow work and locks.
  • Trains and educates deck crew members of vessel duties and responsibilities including but not limited to preparing for barge drop offs and pickups, locks, keeping tow organized and maintained in accordance with applicable laws, policies and procedures including but not limited to James Transportation’s TSMS and USCG regulations.
  • Ensures each assigned vessels are making continuous efforts in improving fleet times and lock times.
  • Trains and mentors, all deck crew members of organizational goals, objectives, and expectations to develop stronger leadership positions within the James Transportation.
  • Ensures the completion of performance evaluations on deck crew members per trip and provides the Port Mate, Captains, and Pilots deck crew promotion recommendations; to then consult with the Port Captain.
  • Ensures weekly/monthly safety inspections, rigging counts and hold daily safety briefings with deck crew members.

Qualifications:

  • TWIC card (required).
  • Capable of prolonged, strenuous work onboard vessels.
  • Effective leadership skills, and written and oral communications skills.
  • Quality 1st Mate Experience.
  • Well-informed of all federal, state and local laws, rules, ordinances and regulations related to maritime operations including the regulations set out in Sub-Chapter M.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

The Maintenance Worker will be responsible for performing routine maintenance; including but not limited to upkeep tasks such as repairs and cleaning. You will also be responsible for applying basic repairs to equipment and ensure facilities are orderly and functional.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine maintenance on building interior and exterior.
  • Performing cleaning activities.
  • Mobile home repairs and rentals.
  • Perform minor repairs such as fixing leaks and plumbing repairs.
  • Install appliances and equipment.
  • Yard upkeep such as mowing lawn and collecting trash.
  • Conduct maintenance tasks.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot equipment and systems.
  • Check functionality of safety systems (e.g. fire alarm).
  • Collaborate with workers and other professionals during renovations.
  • Report to a facilities or maintenance manager for issues.
  • Works in a safe manner and recognizes unsafe situations. Takes appropriate action to ensure safety of themselves and others in building.
  • Ability to be on call.

Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or GED certificate preferred.
  • Experience using hand and electrical tools.
  • Ability to read technical manuals and drawings.
  • Ability to be on call.
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical stamina to perform physical tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • A valid driver’s license.

Job Summary:

Responsible for performing installs and repairs of electrical wiring, systems and fixtures on marine transport vessels.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform installs and repairs of electrical wiring, systems, and fixtures inside and outside of marine transport vessels in varying work conditions.
  • Perform hazards analysis for assigned job to identify potential risks associated with task and take appropriate steps to mitigate risk.
  • Install electrical wiring housing such as conduit and pipes.
  • Perform electrical testing of equipment to ensure proper function and installation.
  • Perform inspections to certify electrical code compliance.
  • Install circuit panels and other electrical hardware and properly connect wiring.
  • Perform repairs of electrical equipment such as electric panels, motor starters, lights, conduit and piping.
  • Carry equipment to worksite such as toolbox and various parts/tooling. Associate may be required to perform confined space entries to access workspaces.
  • Read/comprehend technical documents and drawings to assist in installing, repairing and maintaining equipment.
  • Possess a valid state driver’s license and be able to safely operate motor vehicles to navigate to/from worksites.
  • Operate heavy machinery such as personnel lifts and other mechanical devices.
  • Perform basic cleaning duties such as sweeping and discarding trash.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to meet and maintain all qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain reasonably regular and punctual attendance.
  • Compliance with all personnel policies and practices.
  • On the job training, regular training and re-certification required.
  • Ability to work alone for extended periods and in teams.
